you see, i read in my news feed that tara was finally taking the plunge and moving her ass to hollywood. that's right, hollywood. tara and i were always partners in high school drama (i'll never forget the smell of old eggs during our clowinging assignment!) and she was a star. is a star.

so i offered to take some pictures. partly for tara, mostly for me. she had always been that one subject i wanted to have the chance to photograph. and i'm lucky i have had the chance now, before she's so famous the only people allowed near her with a camera are mario testino and david lachapelle.

i am the annoying tourist.

we spent xmas doing very non-xmassy things this year. we walked for hours along the highline, which i had at the top of my "nyc to-do" list, and would absolutely recommend to everyone and anyone who ever comes near this city. the highline is an old disused railway above the rooftops of chelsea and the meatpacking district (two of my favourite districts of manhattan), which a couple of residents decided to turn into a beautiful park. here's the npr podcast where i first heard about the highline. i just love hearing all about how community can sometimes come together to create something for the greater good, and the highline is a perfect example of exactly that.

so, although the grasses were dry and the flowers had wilted in new york's stiff cold, the highline was still a place to see one of the most beautiful slices of new york. the birds still come to feed on apples left behind by residents, in their own special little bird oasis. and it's probably my favourite glimpses of this city so far.

i am the annoying tourist, and i am wishing you all a very merry xmas (eve).

since i last posted, the fella and i have seen wicked on broadway (totally amazing!), taken a helichopter ride over new york city, and explored some more of manhattan's many and diverse boroughs. i have eaten the iconic new york pizza (the best i have found is ray's cheese pizza... incredible!), downed many paper cups of hot chocolate, and devoured far too many pork spare ribs at a place called hill country bbq.

it is -1ºc outside and the breeze running down the streets and avenues makes it far colder. i need a good coat, scarf, beanie, gloves (conductive, so i can still use my iphone to navigate the subway!), and furry ear muffs.

new york just does xmas right. there are dressed trees and fake presents in every hotel lobby and store, and the converse store even has a tree made from silver-sprayed shoes (to match it's shoe-wreath!). with every purchase, i am wished a "happy holidays" from a shop assistant who would rather be iceskating in rockefeller centre or trimming their own trees. in fact, few staff in these stores can wait to get their feet out on the cold pavement to head home to their own xmas plans.

oh, and i officially love the shopping here. i could never live here: i'd spend every last penny at urban outfitters! though i think i'd miss fresh food and home cooking far too much to stay here longer than a couple of weeks at a stretch.

so have yourselves a merry little xmas, and happy holidays from the cold part of the world! i hope you are all having a special time of year and appreciating the time with your friends and family.

i am a tourist, and last night i enjoyed a ravishing meal at the breslin. we are currently staying at the ace hotel in new york, and it is the most amazing, hipsteriffic hotel i could have ever dreamed of. if only the laundry bag in my room (which i can purchase for the princely sum of usd$50.00) came in pink...

but back to our meal at the breslin. apparently this restaurant caters for nose-to-tail cuisine... not that i'm fond of the idea of chowing down on pig's trotters, but i suppose i could try anything once.

but for last night's dining, it was the safe option: lamb burger with thrice-cooked chips (yes chips, not fries). as the effervescent alex albrecht would say: "ah-mazing".

and the atmosphere: decidedly american. elk, cows and pigs of all known man-made materials adorn the walls and all horizontal surfaces in this place. at least i couldn't spot one that had met its end with a bullet to the head. actually, with the nose-to-tail eating here, the carcass probably wouldn't have made it long enough to be wall-mounted.

beautiful. i'll be back again.

i am a tourist.

my partner and i have been looking forward to this trip to the usa for months. i wasn't even sure we were going to make it, but here i am in a pretty nice hotel room in a dodgy district of san francisco, california. where you don't want to pause to read a map, in case the guy staring at you decides to pee on your converse shoes. the district where the cab driver drops you a block from your hotel because "i can't go down there, it's not safe".

the fella and i have been here in san fran for three days now. today is day one of my flu (of course i get sick when i'm on the other side of the world). so, while the fella is out and about exploring san francisco's night life, i'm in bed after a hot shower and some nurofen, typing and editing images. i should probably sleep so i'm ready to attack tomorrow's flight to nyc, but sleep can wait.

so far we have seen yosemite national park (hands-down one of the most beautiful slices of nature i have ever seen), apple hq (no photos, sorry... cameras are "not allowed"), the golden gate bridge, and some lovely areas of san fran itself. i'm kinda in love with the vibe of this place (if not specifically the shouts and smells of the tenderloin district, where i'm currently listening to the whiny police and ambulance sirens groan by).

i've teamed up with a few photographer friends of late and am oozing inspiration, so hopefully i'll have a few things to show off for all my creative thinking shortly.

in the meantime, i'm planning a trip to the land of the free over xmas this year (so excited to visit my dear friend sarah in nyc!), and it got me to thinking about the last time i headed os. longer ago than i would care to admit, but a few years ago i headed to spain and england for a trip. barcelona has held my heart as one of the most beautiful places i could ever hope to visit, and i highly recommend any artsy types head there immediately. the street art, gaudi's alice in wonderland-esque parque guell, wonderful shopping, and i won't even begin to talk abotu the food in case i salivate over my keyboard! barcelona in particular, and spain in general, is a special place.

here's a shot i took in the incredible antoni gaudi's casa batllo, an absolutely inspired building of practicality and creativity. this shot won be a few awards a couple of years ago, including being given a perfect 100/100 score by one of the five judges at the queensland professional photography awards (thank you mr jason starr!) and a 96 average from all judges. this one has always been special to me.

well, on the way up to the gorgeous sunshine coast town of montville, it started raining. and then it stopped. and then it started again.

but who cares, really. monique & john are the perfect couple. she's artistic to the max, and he's practical and totally head over heels in love with her.

monique is a detail kinda gal, so we got along like a house on fiyah! the girls bouquets were a particular feature, with bright colours and a whack of oomph to zhoosh up the day. and along with the awesomest bridal party ever we all had a great time.

the ceremony was held in the tiniest little church (montville's st mary's anglican church), and the guests crammed in to catch a glimpse of this special moment in monique & johns' lives. some folk were even standing outside and poking their heads in the windows to grab a better view!

what was sure to be an amazing day didn't disappoint, with the evening ending at flaxton gardens. monique's theme of stunning, bright flowers made their way through to the table decorations at the restaurant, and the guests settled in for a night to remember!

what a beautiful day.
